Jan Pitt Born in 1946 Jan was encouraged from an early age to express herself in paint and so began a passion for creating pictures which has grown and developed. During the seventies and eighties she experimented with a number of mediums but principally worked in oils, which she still enjoys. In the 1970’s she moved to Bath and after some time at the Royal West of England Academy set up her studio to continue working. In the 1997 she went to New Zealand for three months and was amazed at the purity of light and brightness of the colours. This experience inspired her to develop an earlier interest in soft pastel as the medium is an ideal vehicle for many of her subjects seen in this new light.
Jan’s pastel work has featured in a National Art magazine; she has run workshops and participated in eight successful two artist exhibitions in Wimbledon Village and Norton St Philip and Bath.
Her subject matter ranges widely including still life, surreal landscapes and the totally abstract. It comes from a lifetime of stored images, some recent and others from the dreams and imagination of childhood making the work fresh and, sometimes, deceptively naive. She rarely paints literally as colour, shape and composition are more important to her than perspective.
